Buy if you've always wanted a rigid EF-mount camera

Posted by Stephen (Spice Rack Media) on 8th May 2020

This setup has been working very well for me. Most of the time, my GH5 has a Viltrox EF-M2 and a Canon 24-105L (first version) attached, along with an Andycine A6 Plus, and a Rode Video Micro or Rode Filmmaker Wireless Lavalier. I mount a SmallRig 2094 handle to a cold shoe adapter on this cage in place of the stock screw-mount handle, which I find is too slow to remove every time my camera needs to be stowed away, or just stripped down.

This cage tightens up the rig considerably, adding a point of contact at the EF-M2's tripod foot. The rig feels rock-solid, which is saying a lot, because the EF-M2 and Metabones adapters both have lots of play in the MFT lens mount, which when it moves back and forth will ruin your footage faster than you can say “IBIS.” With this rig, there’s also no need to worry about the camera jiggling on the tripod with every breeze, or focus adjustment, as it does when mounted directly to the tripod or on a battery grip (or battery grip half-cage, I might add.) Access to the battery door is unencumbered, and there is room to use a dummy battery, which I do most of the time. Adding a ProMediaGear CS2 to the 1/4-20 threaded hole near the upper right corner adds a convenient thumb-rest, as well as another cold shoe mounting point for wireless audio, and the right edge of the cage, while seemingly ruining the nice rubber grip, distances your right hand from the heat-producing parts of the camera, and leads to less hot sticky burn. On top of all this, the rig always balances perfectly with the 2094 handle, and feels great in the hands, helping with fatigue.

Before I bought this cage, I was considering going back to a camcorder, or switching to something like a C100ii for my personal doc work because of the stability. This solves the issues I had, and I'm no longer looking for another camera. If you're looking to use your GH5 essentially as an EF-mount cinema cam, this rig will help you out tremendously.

One small issue is that the focal reducer lock screw negates the benefits of an Arca Swiss quick release plate. I find that it’s permissable, because since the rig will likely be much smaller, I can mount the camera on a smaller tripod if need be. Let’s be real – nobody likes de-caging a camera mid-shoot, and I hope I never have to.

    The design is really brilliant

Posted by Jace on 3rd Apr 2018

It is the very product I want. It fits my Panasonic Lumix GH5 very well. It leaves the ports and buttons of camera accessible, so that more external extension could be achieved. The top handle provides a very good handheld experience and could be adjusted leftwards and rightwards for balance. What excites me is that it ensures standard 85mm rod height. The design is really brilliant and I really admire the talent of designers.
