    Great fit and sturdiness

Posted by Peter Menner on 9th Feb 2021

I bought this to use mainly as an L-bracket with the top cage removed. The height it adds to the camera makes for a much better grip on my camera. The fit is solid against the body. The side bracket, when slid in as much as it can to the body, leaves about 1/4" gap, which is perfect as it allows the port covers to swing freely. The camera mount and bracket adjustment screws are flat head instead of hex, and a small steel screw driver stows magnetically in the side bracket. Unfortunately, there's no storage for the included hex drivers. Older reviews cited some play in the swinging battery door cover, but mine has absolutely none, even when using force. I'm thinking SmallRig may have updated the unit to fix this. I'm continuing to be impressed by SmallRig's quality.

    Nice cage

I have used this mainly with the cage and L bracket removed. It gives me the extra length under the battery grip I was looking for with an ARCA plate. There is a little wobble on the unit's flip down battery access, but unit feels great in the hand. I did use the cage for a video shoot, it worked very well too. It would be nice if there were a way to store the screws on the cage when not in use.

The 2236 is actually a sectional multi purpose unit that becomes a Cage when the Arca Base, the Arca Left Side Bracket and the Top are in use all at the same time: so for that reason I think the short description doesn't do it justice. This is a great versatile product, it works exactly to fit my needs. A tiny bit of weather stripping, that would also eliminate some slight movement for the battery door, could be the only thing missing in the unboxing for this otherwise perfect solution to fit a multitude of uses. I can pair my 2236 with a left hand grip [2218] for video, or, for 'run and gun" when I want the ability to make extremely fast settings adjustments.

Here is an idea.. Very important.

Please do not forget to consider that many people will need to use this L-Bracket's built-in Arca plate to slide the camera into a Zhiyun Crane Gimbal. In this case, it will not work because the gimbal has a motor on the right side, and this plate needs to slide into the Arca Quick Release System from the right side as well.. That would make it impossible. I would be happy to work with SmallRig to develop a solution for this problem. Thanks!
